Oldonyo Lengai & Natron

Oldoinyo Lengai is an active volcanic mountain in Tanzania, which uniquely produces Natrocarbonatite lava. The mane means “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. The highest point of this strato-volcano is 3000m above sea level. The records show that recent eruptions occurred 2007-2008.
This mountain located in the Northern Tanzania, It just lying South of Lake Natron in the Rift Valley. Looking North from its summit crater, the hot barren salt flats of Lake Natron stretch into the distance. To the south stretch the crater Highlands and the Ngorongoro Game Reserve. The Eastern horizons dominated by Kilimanjaro and to the west the forested escarpments and hills comprising the western slopes of the Rift Valley. Every seven years Lengai erupts and plumes of smoke billow out of the crater.
It takes about six to seven hours to summit Oldoinyo le Ngai. It is possible to walk across the crater floor and the tour will be guided by local Maasai guides. Expect to see animals like the olive Baboon, Velvet, Monitor Lizard, Hyenas, Lion, Leopard, Jackal, Grant’s gazelle, Impala, and Zebras. While on the summit of Mountain Oldoinyo Lengai one can sight clearly the Soda Lake Natron which accommodates and consist of good nesting sites for different bird species especially the Flamingos, Pelicans and geese more than 350 different types are recorded to date. Maasai people use Oldoinyo Lengai as a special place for their prayer to GOD known as NGAI “enkai”
Oldonyo Lengai & Lake Natron Tour Plan
Day 1: Arrival
Our driver will pick you at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) transfer to Green Mountain Hotel in Arusha. In the evening you will meet your safari-guide for a short briefing and equipment checking.
Day 2: Arusha to Lake Natron
The morning after breakfast you will meet your driver-guide at the hotel with your packed lunch and drive to Lake Natron for resting, diner and overnight.
Day 3: Natron Oldonyo Lengai
After breakfast, you will head to one of the local village known as Ngaresero, where you visit the waterfalls. You will also spend your time visit the shores of Lake Natron which is a breeding ground for the flamingoes. Hot lunch will be served at the camp before you proceed with the historical tour by visiting hominid footprints and returning to the camp for diner and rest until midnight.
Day 4: Oldonyo lengai to Arusha
Wake up for earlier breakfast at midnight and leave camp driving to the base of Mount Lengai. This tour is guided by a local Maasai guide however will be accompanied by your guide. After 6 hours, you will reach the summit during the sunrise. Spend a few minutes taking photos and descend back to the camp for lunch and finally drive back to Arusha for diner and overnight.
Day 5: Arusha to Airport
Relax at the hotel until the time to go to the Airport. You will get breakfast and lunch at the hotel.
